Edwin de Goeij – ‘Rock Garden’ from Songs

Edwin is a new collaborator for me. Max and I met Edwin through Michael Rault. We had gone to visit Michael in Montreal some years ago, and met Edwin at his party. He was maybe 21 at the time, and was in jazz school for piano. We thought he was so nice. We said, ‘If you're ever in Toronto and you need a place to stay, let us know.’ Maybe a year or two later, he came and we really connected. Then he moved to Toronto and we started hanging out more. He's like part of our family now, we joke that he's our other son.

He's an insanely talented keyboardist, and has an amazing sensibility around music. He’s 25 now, so he's not super young, but he's from a generation of having had the internet and access to all music. You can see how that can be such a beautiful thing. It doesn't have to be this ‘kids had the internet and now they're all fucked up’ thing.

He also helped me with child care. He came to our house multiple times to work on the record and pitched in with the boys so much, and still does. He'll get up at 6am to come help. He’s a kind person who's totally committed to music, and knows that friendships are important. He made this record of instrumentals that I don't even know if he told us he made. I think maybe Max found it. We were listening to that record a lot for a while.
