Pharaoh Sanders - Thembi

It’s hyper close, and at the same time, it’s maximalist. Thembi is so generous; it’s this explosion of ideas, sound, and love, because he wrote it for his love. It’s full of energy, and it’s a record that is, for me, firecrackers in the skies. It’s something that needs to bloom, and this is an energy that interest me in music very much: this idea of awakening, of rising, of giving all you’ve got.

In Travelling, the first track, this intro says a lot of what’s going to happen in music in the fifty years after. The rise of ambient, house music, trip hop, electronic music – there is this idea of building a landscape with instruments and sounds and electronics, that is very visionary. And at the same time, because it’s live instruments, there is the breathing, this idea of giving your breath in the music. So, there is no voice, but there is a lot of breathing.
