Broadcast - The Noise Made by People

Broadcast were a band that I heard in my 20s and grew to love even more in my 30s. So much of that is to do with the intricacy of their work and how much you discover with every listen. Their records are so complex, yet nothing ever gets lost because of their no-nonsense, down-to-earth approach to songs and to singing. There is a self-awareness to Broadcast that allows them to explore so much, and to take you on that journey with them. They have been a huge influence on how Rhys [Edwards] and I make records. We have learnt a lot from Broadcast and they strike a balance between exploration and experimentation, yet nothing is ever su-perfluous. Everything feels necessary and there is a practicality about them that I love.

The Noise Made by People is so calm and considered and that’s the amazing thing about Trish Keenan’s singing; she’s never singing at you, she’s just singing. You listen and you listen and then suddenly her lyrics hit you. It’s such a talent to have a voice that doesn’t get in the way of the song. I love Broadcast. They’re everything that’s right about music.
