Perfume Genius Details New Album, ‘Ugly Season’

It will be accompanied by a short film, made by visual artist and director Jacolby Satterwhite

Perfume Genius has shared details of a new album, called Ugly Season.

Out in June, the 10-track album was written as the accompaniment to Perfume Genius (real name Mike Hadreas) and choreographer Kate Wallich’s immersive dance piece, The Sun Still Burns Here, which was commissioned by the Seattle Theatre Group and Mass MoCA, and performed during residencies in Seattle, Minneapolis, New York City and Boston throughout 2019. You can listen to ‘Pop Song’ from the album, which Hadreas previously shared in 2019, above.

The release of Ugly Season will coincide with the unveiling of a new short film, created by visual artist and director Jacolby Satterwhite. "This project is the genesis of a whole new direction that I’m taking, one that I’ve been thinking about within this endemic culture since 2020," Satterwhite said in a statement. "Mike [Hadreas] and I are both writing scripts. My visual narrative serendipitously mirrors the lyrical direction in his music; it’s a rare, like-minded bond. It’s a creation myth. How do you architecturally mould and render an idealised version of utopia? It’s about making something that you desire so beyond your scope that it’s hard to grapple into a concrete form."

Matador will release Ugly Season on June 17, 2022.
