Loraine James Contributes To New Audiovisual Installation

The installation, created alongside Rebecca Smith, is part of a new project called All Things Equal, billed as a manifesto for gender equality in the music industry

Loraine James has teamed up with multimedia artist Rebecca Smith to create a new audiovisual installation.

It’s part of All Things Equal, a new project from Manchester-based creative music charity Brighter Sound, which is billed as a manifesto for gender equality in the music industry. James has provided the soundtrack to the installation, which will be debuted at Manchester’s Mayfield Depot on International Women’s Day (March 8). Shannen SP will also DJ at the launch event, while Princess Arinola Adegbite contributes a spoken word piece to the installation too.

"This was such a unique opportunity to explore music in a different context and develop ideas alongside a visual artist," James said of the collaboration with Smith. "I’m so excited to see how they work together."

The All Things Equal manifesto is the culmination of Brighter Sound’s five-year-long Both Sides Now initiative, which has looked to bring about long-lasting change with regards to opportunities, roles, representation and recognition of women and people of marginalised genders in the music industry. Read an open letter, which collects the findings and recommendations from the manifesto, here. Find more information about the launch event here, and watch a trailer for the project above.
