Pet Shop Boys And Dusty Springfield – ‘In Private’

My partner Oliver, when we were courting, couldn't believe I hadn't heard this track. The combination of a massive pop song with Dusty Springfield and the Pet Shop Boys is pretty great. I love her slightly leathery sounding voice with their… I don't know, maybe they are real trumpets, but it just sounds like a great poppy disco track.

I also think it has got a genuine emotional punch, because I think originally Neil Tennant wrote it. If you think of it as being sung by a gay man and potentially someone going back to their wife, which is one of the lines in the song, and maybe he's more of that generation where you had to be not out loud about being gay, then it's not trite. It's definitely got something about it that just rings true to me, from my perspective, and just her singing it is also great. I think Pet Shop Boys thought she shouldn't be in retirement. I imagine that they wanted her to have a massive album. I’d definitely put it on at a party.
