From singing along with Neneh Cherry on her way to school to a lockdown obsession with Durutti Column, Julie Campbell, aka LoneLady, takes Elizabeth Aubrey through the thirteen definitive records of her life

The Durutti Column – Vini Reilly

Like with Underworld, really, another hole that I went down during lockdown was Durutti Column and I listened to them constantly. I saw Durutti Column at Manchester International Festival a few years ago and that gig has stayed with me. I do believe that music waits for you and when you're ready to connect to it, it's there waiting for you. And I just feel like The Durutti Column has been quietly waiting for me for years, and now I've found it. I feel like I've just been hit by something, and it's just genius, every single album it's absolute genius. It's just not like anything else.

The first time I listened to this record, I did something I've not done for a lot of years, which was just lie down and listen to the music, as in listen to music not as a soundtrack to something else that you're doing, like tidying up or whatever, I just stopped and I just listened, and I just slipped away. As a kid, I just used to sit on my bed and sing along and listen, and now it’s just like my attention span is smashed about so much that I’ve not done that for years. It really struck me that this music made me just lie on my bed and stop. I felt quite peaceful, which is a rare feeling for me!

I actually find that there was something quite spiritually fulfilling about this music. Where Underworld give me a bit of hope, The Durutti Column almost make me believe in spirits or something. I found it really special.
