Cesária Évora – Miss Perfumado
My partner found this song when she was running a cafe down in Nashville. She put on wonderful music that went all day, just in the background. People expect music in the background and that drives me nuts because I have to listen to music. Music was not wallpaper in my time, whether it was a folk song, or classical music – somebody had created it for you to listen to, not to multitask to. I would always stop washing dishes in the cafe or cleaning up at night just to sit and listen to this. She comes from Cape Verde, I think, which is I think on the Portuguese coast and this is about the longing for Cape Verde. My life is filled with longing, longing for the past but it's that longing for the place she came from that I connect with. She's such a superb singer. She’s an entertainer and she's flamboyant. She has a large voice and she's comfortable in her largeness. It's not a sharp, sharpened voice, it's a motherly, grandmotherly. She is a talented singer.
