I think it was maybe my first tape. I was quite small and didn’t really have much context for what I was hearing. I knew classical and Iranian folk and pop music, 70s music, a bit of gospel from my aunt, that was the vibe of my house. So I didn’t really have a relationship with the radio or what was happening musically around the world. I don’t remember how or why I got the tape, but it impacted my trajectory. If I hadn’t heard it, my music would have been different. I loved how thick and mean and greasy it was, and I loved that it was paired with vocals.
