Black Lives In Music Launches Survey Of Artists’ Experiences

It has been shared alongside a new five-part video series, 'A Celebration Of Black Music'

Black Lives In Music has launched a survey for Black musicians to answer questions about their experience of living and working as a musician in the UK.

Though the group’s focus is primarily in jazz and classical music, all Black musicians working in any genre in the UK are encouraged to fill out the survey. No comprehensive data of Black musicians’ experiences and views currently exists, and Black Lives In Music hopes that producing such data can be used to make positive change for Black musicians with regards to addressing issues they face within the music industry as well as barriers that exist to getting involved within the industry.

Alongside the survey, Black Lives In Music has launched a new five-part video series, A Celebration Of Black Music. Hosted by presenter Zeze Millz, the series will feature interviews with various guests, including Shabaka Hutchings and music psychologist and researcher Natasha Hendry. You can watch the first episode, which features composer, singer, songwriter and cellist Ayanna Witter Johnson, and 2018’s Young Jazz Musician winner Xhosa Cole, above.
