Bobby Gillespie Announces First Memoir, ‘Tenement Kid’

The Primal Scream frontman's book covers his Glasgow childhood and the events up to the release of 1991's 'Screamadelica'

Bobby Gillespie has announced his first memoir, Tenement Kid.

The autobiography is billed as the story of "a decade lost to Thatcherism and saved by acid house," and will cover the Primal Scream lead member’s childhood in Glasgow as well as his time in the Jesus And Mary Chain, going all the way up to the release of Primal Scream 1991 third album, Screamadelica, and its subsequent tour. It’s structured in four parts.

"At the beginning of 2020 I wanted to challenge myself creatively and do something I had never done before," Gillespie says of the memoir. "I didn’t want to write another rock record, I’d done plenty of those, so, I decided to write a memoir of my early life and worked on it all through the summer, autumn and winter of 2020 and here it is.

"It is titled Tenement Kid as I spent the first ten years of my life living in one. I am very proud of it. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it."

White Rabbit will publish Tenement Kid on October 28, 2021.
