Fiona Apple – When the Pawn…
I'm not really a massive jazz fan and a lot of late 90s introspective singer-songwriter things weren't really things I liked, but I thought Fiona Apple had a bit of bite, and a real quirk, and her lyrics were really clever. The first thing I saw of her was 'Paper Bag', which is on that album, I just saw it on a music channel and I still think it's a brilliantly written song. I just think she's a really good storyteller and puts a lot of vulnerability in her songs. It was the first time I'd got into an album like that. Fiona Apple is quite nice and quirky, she was a bit offbeat.
