Evidently Chicken Supreme: John Cooper Clarke's Favourite Songs
Alex Burrows , November 18th, 2020 11:32

Performance poet, style icon and broadcaster John Cooper Clarke tells Alex Burrows about his most-loved songs of all time and growing up during the birth of rock & roll. Portrait by Paul Wolfgang Webster.

Blondie – ‘Denis’
A cover of ‘Denise’ by Randy & The Rainbows which I loved as a kid. It’s one of those where the cover is better than the original – it does happen from time to time and this is one example of it. That was a fabulous sound. Deborah Harry was and is a terrific singer and a great presence in the world. Blondie quickly got past their punk rock period which I thought was a smart move, because she had it all. Like all the best people, she transcended the milieu of which she emerged. Anybody that’s any good does that.
