'Aya To Majo' is adapted from a story by the same writer that inspired 'Howl's Moving Castle'

Studio Ghibli has confirmed details of a new film due to be released later this year.

Aya To Majo, or Aya And The Witch, is based on Earwig And The Witch, a children's book by Diana Wynne Jones, who also wrote the story that inspired Ghibli's Howl's Moving Castle. It's been directed by Gorō Miyazaki‎, the son of the Japanese animation studio's co-founder, Hayao Miyazaki‎, and has been made with computer-generated animation, in contrast to many past Ghibli works.

It will tell the story of Aya, an orphan who is adopted by a witch and arrives at her new home to find it is filled with magic.

The film will premiere in Japan in winter of this year on the country's NHK general TV. It had been due to debut at the 2020 Cannes Film Festival, but those plans have been cancelled as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, the film will be shown in cinemas around the world some months after its initial Japanese TV premiere.

The release of Aya To Majo follows on from the debut earlier this year of 21 Studio Ghibli films on Netflix.
