'The Practice of Love' takes inspiration from Valie Export’s 1985 film of the same name

Jenny Hval will release a new album this September.

Titled The Practice of Love, it shares a title with Valie Export's 1985 drama film from which it takes inspiration. It's preceded by lead single 'Ashes To Ashes' which you can hear above.

Hval has collaborated with a number of vocalists on the album, namely Vivian Wang, Laura Jean Englert and Félicia Atkinson, and works more closely with the 'pop song format' than on previous material.

She says that these various voices on the record could be "the voice of someone who was once an angry teenager, furious at the hierarchies, many years later. No longer angry, but still feeling apart from the mainstream... longing for community. I wanted to give the feeling of being apart from the world a mystical, but beautiful place, meaning pop songs... A place that also contains enough depth to bury oneself in."

The Practice of Love is due out on September 13 via Sacred Bones Records. It can be pre-ordered here.

Jenny Hval will follow the album's release with a show at London's Milton Court on September 29 and will also play Le Guess Who? festival in Utrecht on November 9. Find her full list of upcoming tour dates here.
