Instant Classic continue their unbeatable run with a new release from Wacław Zimpel and Kuba Ziołek

With Instant Classic continuing to pump out a run of excellent releases, the label's next release comes in the form of the first collaborative album from Wacław Zimpel and Kuba Ziołek.

Zimpel is known for his solo work, as well as appearance as part of Hera and Ircha, while Ziołek makes up part of projects such as Stara Rzeka, Innercity Ensemble and Alameda Organisation. The record, entitled Zimpel/Ziołek, is made up of four tracks, and one of them, 'Memory Dome', is streaming above.

"In December of 2015 I witnessed Wacław perform a solo set in Alchemia club in Kraków," says Ziołek. "After his concert we discussed the possibilities of working together on some music and not much later we met at the rehearsals, followed by our first live gigs under the Zimpel/Ziołek moniker."

Zimpel adds: "I remember that during this time I was drifting away from my free jazz roots and wanted to incorporate some electronics that Kuba already mastered in his projects. Both of us were keen on repetitive structures and this process of defining a common musical ground evolved in a very organic way.

"We often stopped playing when something interesting came into our view and messed with those motifs adding new layers and instruments," Zimpel continues, referring to the initial improvisation that their studio experimentations involved. "The compositions took other forms during our concerts where the process of playing is more dynamic, based on instincts. That's also why you often are unable to see the bigger picture. I think that it's only been in the studio where we managed to take total control over our music."

On October 10, Zimpel and Ziołek will perform at Manggha Museum of Japanese Art and Technology in Kraków as a part of this year's Unsound as part of a bill that also features with BNNT and Mats Gustafsson. The album is also released next month.
