The Norwegian pop star made one of 2015's best albums in Ten Love Songs, but her Baker's Dozen reflects that synthpop was never where her heart lay

Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
I love all Miles: he's been with me since my teens, starting with Kind Of Blue. It's difficult to pick just one, but Bitches Brew is a brilliant piece of art. It's all about his performance and his spirit, and his refusal to compromise. He always followed his own instincts, which is very inspiring. The music seems to come from a different world: how can someone make something like that? Miles changed styles, and I like to move on, too, because otherwise I just get bored. I need to make music to express what I need to say: before this new album, I got bored of electronics. And I couldn't fit a piano into my apartment in London, but I had my guitar, so I started playing that instead, and it was more natural to express what I wanted to say as a singer-songwriter. Some people have a sound and keep it, and they can still be brilliant and make interesting music. Artists work in different ways.
