Translated as "The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices", Bulgarian folk music would seem to stick out some in this list. Why is it important to you?

My boyfriend played it for me shortly after we met, and I was just like, "What is this?" It was like my heart's music that had been gone for a long time and I was hearing it again, even though it was the first time. I mean, I've always had an old soul influence, and thought hopefully I could get to a point someday where I could sing like Otis Redding. I want that level of surprise. It's very new, but very warm and familiar at the same time. Where they go is not where you expect, but it's still so satisfying. You're always waiting for this certain type of note to resolve, and they go to ones that I wasn't waiting for, but so glad where they went.

I can even sing along even though I have no idea what they're saying. [Laughs] Actually, I'm curating a festival [Le Guess Who] and I think I've confirmed them to play. It's the kind of music that you never thought you would hear live, or you would have to really spend a bunch of money to go somewhere to listen to them far from home.
