LISTEN: New Laura Cannell Track

The fiddle and recorder player previews an upcoming 2017 release with a new track and a run of live shows

Regular readers of this site will know that we’re big fans of Laura Cannell, with her 2015 album Beneath Swooping Talons still remaining a strong favourite amongst our ranks.

With some time having lapsed since the release of that record and her 2016 follow-up Simultaneous Flight Movement, she has been busy working on new material, and above is a sample of what she’s been up to in the form of ‘Blacksmith’, on which she swaps her usual ancient melodies, opting instead to use her instrument as a rhythmic device. It makes for an eerie, captivating listen and comes ahead of the next release from her this year on Brawl Records.

Cannell also has a number of special live shows lined up ahead of the release of new material. On July 7, she will play Blythburgh’s Holy Trinity Church. The show marks a rare solo live outing for her and will see Cannell performing in a setting perfectly tuned to her live show. You can find out more information on that show here.

She will also play alongside Rhodri Davies at London’s Cafe Oto on July 20, as part of a stellar line-up also taking in Sarah Angliss, Pete Flood, a Rhodri Davies solo performance and a brand new spoken word piece by our very own Luke Turner and Jennifer Lucy Allan.
