LISTEN: New Re-TROS

Beijing post-punk group share first taste of debut UK album

Beijing-based post-punkers Re-TROS will soon release new single ‘8 + 2 + 8 II’, and above we are giving you a first listen of the track in question.

The 10-minute track is built on colossal drums and handclaps to create something that connects the dots between post-punk and synth-pop. Rebuilding The Rights Of Statues, to give the band their full name, are gaining heavy traction in China’s post-punk scene at present with their profile no doubt set to travel beyond their locale in the year to come.

The track above is the first taster of their debut UK album, Before The Applause, which is due for release via Modern Sky later this year. That will follow on from two albums released to audiences in Asia in recent years.

‘8 + 2 + 8 II’ is inspired by Steve Reich’s Clap Music. "We wanted to make it in the simplest and most direct way without too many unnatural sounds," explains Hua Dong of the band. "It’s hard to say what this song is about. The lyrics, talk about three scenes- a boy burning videotapes, a pink flag burned in a museum and a wheel burning in a square (sung in German). They are all related to burning."
