Are Roland Reviving The TR-909?

Iconic drum machine could be coming back, according to hints by its creators

Exciting news for gear nerds as Roland seem to have started hinting at the return of the TR-909 drum machine next month.

As FACT reports, the team at Roland are currently planning a special ‘909 Celebration Event’ to take place on September 9 and that will involve the unveiling of new products. “For 33 years the TR-909 has been one of the most definitive sounds in electronic music and the beating heart of DJ culture,” says the company. “Join us as we celebrate 33 years of the ‘909’ with the release of many new and inspiring electronic instruments.”

The TR-909, despite being in heavy use today among musicians, most commonly in techno, was discontinued in 1985 and therefore now picks up a high price on the second-hand market. It’s not yet known exactly what Roland will be unveiling next month, but all hints point towards an update of the TR-909 or a brand new drum machine.
