Sound recordist takes inspiration from Italian composer Giacinto Scelsi on new recording; listen to it below

Next month sees the release of a new EP from the SN Variations label curated around the music of Italian composer Giacinto Scelsi. The EP features a new work by Chris Watson inspired by Scelsi’s explorations of ‘pure sound’ and you can listen to it exclusively above right now.

Appearing alongside a new recording of Scelsi’s ‘Duo for Violin and Cello’ by Lucy Railton and Aisha Orazbayeva as well as a shakuhachi honkyoku performance by Joe Browning, Watson’s piece, entitled ‘Invertebrae Harmonics’, incorporates field recordings of insects made originally on a boardwalks in the middle of the Borneo jungle. The piece is taken from a larger installation work called Notes from a Forest Floor, which was first presented at the ICA last June. The EP will be available in all the usual digital formats as well as in a limited vinyl edition of 300 copies. It’s out on March 8 and you can pre-order it directly from the label here.
