Chinatown (Roman Polanski, 1974)

What's not to enjoy with Chinatown? I think it's possibly up there in my top three favourite films of all time. I don't think you can talk about it without talking about the script, really. Everything about the script is impeccable. And then you add the direction and the costumes and it's faultless. I think I must have first seen it in my 20s. I used to work in a cinema that did double bills in Edinburgh and I saw a lot of old films on the big screen for the first time. I think I must have got it out on video as well. Like all the best films it took me a few viewings to start really appreciating its genius.
