Withnail And I (Bruce Robinson, 1987)

It's one of those films that I watched with the band countless times. It's a real watch-with-friends film. I think watching Withnail... on your own can be quite depressing. It's really a group experience. It's the one film that I've countlessly quoted from with my friends. I think it's one of the best scripts ever written, really. You can just read the script and its like reading the funniest book ever written. With Slow West, I mean it's not a comedy and it doesn't rely on dialogue as much as Withnail... but I wanted to make the lines at least have some kind of ring to them. I mean it was nice on set that a lot of the cast were quoting the lines - “lets drift” and so on - so I kind of knew that there was something there.
