LISTEN: Makaton’s Ra Ra Replica EP

Steve Bailey returns with some heavier-than-thou electronics with first EP in five years, coming out on Token next week

Makaton, aka UK techno producer Steve Bailey, will be releasing his first new material in five years next Monday, December 8. His new EP, Ra Ra Replica, follows up his last release, 2009’s Leave Them All Behind, with both out via Belgian label Token, continuing an extremely fine line of material that imprint has released this year, Surgeon, Inigo Kennedy, Rødhåd and Eschaton (Ancient Methods & Orphx), among them. Ahead of that, they’ve kindly given us a first play of the four-tracker. While there’s no shortage of kinetic, well-honed kick drum onslaughts, Bailey shades the EP with some finer textures: witness the choral voices midway through the finely-named ‘Spit To Lubricate’ or the borderline ludicrous scuttle of slasher flick string-stabs on opener, ‘Lead You Astray’. Give it a full spin above.
