Shellac, 2002
When the first ATP took place at Camber Sands in 2000, there weren't many opportunities to have photographs published and I took more pictures of the beach than indoors. Two years later, when Everett True and Steve Gullick started Careless Talk Costs Lives it looked like that might change. Thus, I suggested covering ATP and secured a photopass, which was great for access though it meant getting something that Steve - who I hadn't met as yet - would approve.

Shellac had turned the role of curator on its head by opening each day downstairs on the second stage. When I saw the two-tone print on Steve Albini's Screamers T-shirt, I knew what I'd try to capture. As Steve Albini often shouts his vocals from a distance, it wasn't hard to get a shot without distracting microphones. However, it was only afterwards that I realised that what made this composition work is the lack of a visible guitar strap, which as admirers of Albini will know, he wraps around his waist.
