Tanya Tagaq - Auk/Blood
I was really happy to discover the work of Tanya Tagaq. Inuit throat singing is some of the most intriguing vocalizing I've ever heard. I remember hearing her work featured on Bjork's Medulla, and was instantly taken by her vocal games. Auk/Blood is a really fascinating exploration of the possibilities of throat singing in contemporary music. Her singing undoubtedly feels very primal and ancient, but backed with electronics it seems to fit into a whole new musical universe. It's exciting to hear someone take something so age-old and weave it through a modern context.
