Self-described "funeral pop" artist Anna Von Hausswolff has just announced her second album Ceremony, out on June 17 via her new label City Slang. To celebrate, she’s made the LP cut ‘Deathbed’ available as a download – get it below:
While the word ‘epic’ gets bandied around a little too easily, ‘Deathbed’ rightly earns the appellation. Beyond the fact of its eight-minute length, it occupies vast, cathedral-like proportions (fittingly, one of the stops on her tour next month is Halifax Minster), with a conflux of organ tones, brushed cymbal and volleys of echoing guitar ringing out for the first five minutes, before Von Hausswolff enters with a graciously febrile vocal turn. Regular Quietus contributor Wyndham Wallace picked her out as his highlight of this year’s by:Larm festival in Norway, and you can read his write-up of her performance here.
