Modern Ovens For Klub Gutenberg!

Plus! Avian sex talk

After the super-smash sellout success of the first Luke Haines-headlined Klub Gutenberg, the Quietus and Rough Trade Books are pleased to announce that the December 5th installment will feature non-other than premier Brighton-based Jonathan Richman tribute group, The Modern Ovens. The Modern Ovens are an invigorating salute to the songs, style and ice-cream fixations of Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers – featuring members of BSP, the Brakes, Tenderfoot and Underage Boy Alpinist. They have been joyously received on the festival scene, praised for their skilled and affectionate tribute to Richman’s wonderful tunes and wonderfully wonky worldview.

And of course that will not be all. We're fulfilling our remit to fortify minds as well as ears with a guest speaker in the form of Professor Tim Birkhead discussing birds and sex. A compelling talk on avian mating strategy from the respected Sheffield University professor and star of the recent BBC TV series Birds Britannica. Tim’s audio-illustrated presentation will centre on the fascinating and even frightening mating behaviour of birds – from the sluttish hedge sparrer to the sex-criminal mallard duck.

After a bravura performance at last months’ Klüb Gütenberg, Andrew returns to give an audio-visual talk based on his book Love Music Love Food: The Rock Star Cookbook – a book published in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust and centring on brilliant rock/grub images from celebrated food photographer Patrice de Villiers. Siouxsie Sioux, Brian May and beetroot-mad Alex Kapranos all feature... alongside British Sea Power. Indeed, exclusive BSP-customised copies of the book will be available at Klüb Gütenberg, making for unsurpassed yuletide gifting items. You can purchase advance tickets for this excellent night of music and erudition here.
