Rodriguez

Like folk siren Vashti Bunyan, Rodriguez is a figure from the late 60s/early 70s who’s enjoyed an unexpected career renaissance. Having retired from music after finding little success with his debut, Cold Facts, and its follow-up, Coming From Reality, the Detroit native’s work eventually went on to achieve cult fame in countries including South Africa — unbeknownst to him at the time. Thankfully, someone told the old boy, because he’s now here playing a late Sunday slot at Green Man. Wearing a black sleeveless shirt that reveals a surprisingly toned pair of biceps for a man in his 60s, Rodirguez is riveting when performing the likes of ‘Sugar Man,’ though attentions start to sway when he occasionally dips into Santana-style noodling. Thankfully, he intersperses those moments between his standout songs, and in doing so gives us reason to believe that he fully deserves his belated success.

The Doran Verdict: Doran returns! Though any attempts to discuss music are met with comments about Caprica Six’s manly jaw and how hot the President Of The Colonies is.
