If you bump any protruding joint in just the right place it makes your bones ring like a church bell, which is really unpleasant. That's the vicarious sensation you get seeing Kathy Bates hobbling James Caan's ankles with a sledge hammer. The "God, I love you" from Bates, doesn't really excuse her actions. This is the kind of scene which makes your balls recede slightly back into your body.
