David Moats , March 31st, 2009 11:08

In honour of April Fool's Day, The Quietus collects the best Hollywood Hoaxes: from Joaquin's beard to Marilyn's letters; from the Hollywood makeup artists who made Bigfoot to Kubrick's moon landing; from electric shocks in the cinema to faux documentaries with Herzog; it's all here.

Cannibal Holocaust

Yet another film based on the premise of ostensibly found footage by dead filmmakers. The acting is such that no one could ever mistake it for a genuine document of an anthropological expedition, but many people were convinced – due to some astoundingly good-for-the-time gore effects – that Cannibal Holocaust was genuine snuff: that the actors had seriously been consumed by genuine cannibals for the sake of a horror film. Several animals were killed in the making of this film and the raping, burning and pillaging was pretty damn realistic, but while several moral lines were transgressed, murder wasn't one of them. While the use of actual native tribes as actors can be seen as pure exploitation, the film mostly makes the American imperialists look like the real savages.
