A true modernist masterpiece; both on page and film. The daring use of colour and font-style is but a small reflection of its clear-eyed confidence. Using Alan Sillitoe’s snappy novel as the source, and with Karel Reisz at the helm and Albert Finney as the lead, this was never going to be some po-faced or unreal take on the working classes, but something closer to a post-war Mean Streets.
