Following on from last month’s enjoyable Scala Beyond event, Savage Cinema is screening a double bill of films by the acclaimed yet underrated British director and visual artist Philip Ridley.
The director’s first two films The Reflecting Skin and The Passion Of Darkly Noon will be shown at the Roxy Bar and Screen in Borough, near London Bridge, on September 18 with Ridley himself appearing afterwards to talk about the films.
While the director is perhaps best known for his theatrical work, such as Mercury Fur and Tender Napalm, the screened films are widely regarded as some of his best work. The event represents a rare chance to see these films in the UK, given that neither are widely available on DVD.
The Reflecting Skin (1990) features Viggo Mortensen in an early lead role, as Cameron, a soldier returned home to rural Idaho from a tour of duty, whose brother believes an English widow living out in the prairies may be a vampire preying on Cameron. The Passion Of Darkly Noon (1995) also features Mortensen, alongside another early turn from a burgeoning Hollywood star, with Brendan Fraser playing the deeply religious Darkly Noon, who is taken in by a couple living in the woods after his Christian commune is attacked.
