DVVLLXNS ‘Xochitl’ from thxnxwmxnvmxnts on Vimeo.
We’re rather fond of Thrill Jockey-signed stargazers Barn Owl here at Quietus HQ – 2010’s Ancestral Star landed in our favourite albums of that year, and its follow-up Lost In The Glare was a similarly lovely, sun-scorched listen. This year both members are releasing solo material, with one half of Barn Owl, Evan Caminiti, recently releasing a tape entitled Night Dust and with an album Dreamless Sleep arriving next month through Thrill Jockey.
The band’s other half, Jon Porras, has also been hard at work, with his debut EP as DVVLLXNS (nope, us neither), entitled LXTVNY set to arrive mid-September through Shelter Press. Where his work with Barn Owl is more heavily guitar-based, his tracks under this pseudonym involve more electronic production techniques – the EP’s opener, which you can listen to as part of the stream below, is driven by soft, muffled beats and parting clouds of static and voice. In advance of the EP’s release, the label have released a suitably grainy video to accompany the track ‘Xochitl’, which you can watch above.
