Thanks to Sheffield sternsmiths The Black Dog for alerting to this wonderful remix of Coil by Surgeon. The Birmingham-based purveyor of excellent, murky techno takes Coil track ‘Teenage Lightning’ and adds an anxious, skittering electronic chatter to it. The resulting piece is watery, sensual and strange. (Also worth listening to is Coil’s own rework of ‘Teenage Lightning’ into an elegant Steve Reich-esque opus on the magnificent Ape Of Naples album. Surgeon plays Bloc on Saturday, July 7th. Surgeon’s long-standing love of the music of Coil can also be heard in the mix he made as a tribute to Peter Christopherson in the wake of his passing on in late 2010. You can download that here.
Surgeon writes: "To accompany the 2001 re-releases of their first 3 albums, Coil decided to also release a vinyl box set edition which would include a 12" of remixes by Autechre and Surgeon.
The remixes were completed and approved by Coil, but the project stayed on the shelf. Sadly since then both John Balance and Peter Christopherson have both died and it’s with the greatest respect to their memories that I make this remix publicly available."
