British Sea Power To Soundtrack UK Coast

Collaboration with the BFI Archive at Sheffield Doc Fest

It was only the other week that The Quietus was at the Large Hadron Collider to write about their musical accompaniment to Out Of The Present. And yet today comes news of another fascinating soundtrack by the group. British Sea Power have been commissioned by Sheffield Doc Fest to create the music for a film called From the Sea to the Land Beyond, a documentary and "poetic meditation" on the British coastline, made out of footage from 100 years of footage from the BFI Archive.

The hour long documentary, directed by Penny Woolcock, will be premiered at Sheffield Doc Fest on June 13th. There will then be an interactive, online version of the film where users can edit their own "postcard" documentaries about the coast, again with music by BSP. These will remain online on something called ‘The Space’ and be accessible via computers, smart phones, and those clever internet tellies until October 31st 2012. A DVD is likely to follow in 2013. Says Woolcock of the project, "To be offered the chance to direct such a lyrical cinematic piece is an absolute dream request, I leapt at the chance to do it."

The soundtrack work marks the continuation of a busy year for British Sea Power, with their thirsty and brilliant Klub Krankenhaus events a live highlight for the Quietus in 2012. The next one takes place on Friday, May 4th at The Haunt in Brighton, with support from Pictish Trail and DJs Simon Price and John & Jehn. This week, British Sea Power’s Martin Noble will join members of Brakes and Electric Soft Parade for a rare outing of The Modern Ovens, their Jonathan Richman tribute group.
