Ralph Cumbers is a busy man. Already this year he’s released a glut of great records – Inner Space Break Free as Bass Clef, two cassettes under his alias Some Truths, a collaboration with Ekoplekz (Ekoclef) and a whole raft of CDRs as Coseph Jonrad – all through his own label Magic & Dreams.
Now he’s giving away yet another. FIAT Million Hits is another under the name Coseph Jonrad, and it’s available now to download from his website.
Previous Coseph Jonrad tapes have been track-by-track remixes of entire albums that Cumbers "obsessed over as a kid". FIAT Million Hits is a slight shift in emphasis – instead it’s a remix of the first album he ever got, a compilation that came free with his family’s car. Particular mention must go to a gorgeous droney take on Al Green’s ‘Let’s Stay Together’.
"The sleeve-notes jubilantly proclaim the many successes of FIAT and their million-unit-selling car," Cumbers explains on the site. "Again, I’m not sure why – we’d already bought the car. They also somehow manage to tie car and album together with an environmental theme – about the island of Madagascar and it’s myriad endangered species."
He’s also made a video for synth-murk opener ‘Rio’:
