Jane Weaver has written an illustrated fairytale book to accompany her album The Fallen By Watch Bird. The album itself is great, seven tracks of beautiful, spooked pop influenced by "Eastern European children’s cinema, Germanic kunstmarchen, 70s television music and early murmurs of eighties synth pop… [It] casually alludes to a floating storyline based around missing seamen, telekinesis, avian messengers, white witchcraft and death & rebirth."
The book, of the same name, combines illustrations by Mancunian filmmakers Kluncklick with Weaver’s own narrative:
"When a girl becomes estranged from her heart’s desire it takes a special kind of energy to bring them back together. But is the power of true love strong enough, or will she have to call upon her faithful magical Watchbird to guide her through her mystic and treacherous quest?"
Weaver runs Bird Records, associated with the ever-excellent Finders Keepers label, and is closely involved with many of the people surrounding that collective. The Fallen By Watch Bird has been something of a sprawling project. as well as the original album, it’s also taken in a reinterpretations album, The Watchbird Alluminate, featuring Demdike Stare, The Focus Group, Anworth Kirk and more.
