Crystal Castles frontwoman Alice Glass has been named 2008’s coolest person in this week’s edition of NME.
The skulking Canuck, whose face is often obscured by hoods and terrible posture, bumped Glasto-baiting rapper Jay Z and MGMT’s Andrew VanWyngarden into second and third place respectively in the magazine’s annual Cool List. The former star was photographed outside his home in New Jersey looking tired and irritable.
Other cool folk to appear on the list included Scarlett Johansson, Liam Gallagher and revived icon of ’80s AOR Peter Gabriel. Gallows’ Frank Turner was robbed of his 2007 crown, while two recently cool people in Amy Winehouse and Pete Doherty have been banished as the squares Quietus readers always knew they were.
Glass had this to say on her remarkable triumph: "I’m flattered. But back in school the people who held themselves in the same regard were the biggest waste of skin I’ve ever met."
Crystal Castles’ self-titled debut is a stirring fifty-odd minutes alright. Watch Glass singing all weird like only a cool person would, here:
