Despite facing the difficult task of playing a set based around new material at Koko on Tuesday night, Patrick Wolf charmed the youthful crowd with a mix of equal thirds Greatest Hits, artfully chosen album tracks, and cuts from Lupercalia. ‘The Libertine’ brought the crowd into a pogo frenzy, ‘Accident and Emergency’ resulted in a near ironic crush to the front, and even old favourites like ‘The Lighthouse’ off his debut album were greeted with a singalong.
New material went down a bomb, ‘The City’ getting an old-fashioned Radio One Roadshow reception, and Wolf’s sister Jo Apps’ backing vocals turned ‘Together’ into a full-on family affair. The crowd, meanwhile, hung on Wolf’s every word and briefest movement. It’s at times hard to believe that this is the same shy, quiet, and softly spoken boy who barely filled a sitting room at his gigs back in 2003.
