The Quietus is teaming up with our friends at the Branchage International Film festival to showcase a counter to the fairy tale panto season this December.
On December 17th, we’ll be taking over the rather splendid St Leonard’s Church in Shoreditch to present Icelandic quartet Amiina’s live soundtracks to films by pioneering German Animator Lotte Reiniger.
The films were originally commissioned for this year’s Branchage Festival in Jersey, and such was the terrific response out on the island, we thought we’d give London a go.
Instead of the usual seasonal Cinderellas featuring ‘stars’ from the scrag end of telly flailing around in drag, Amiina’s soundtracks explore the dark core and moral lessons that were the focus of Reiniger’s brilliantly crafted films.
As Amiina’s Maria Sigfúsdóttir told the Quietus before Branchage, "These are magical and sometimes quite dark atmospheres, because these are Grimm’s stories, most of them, and I think we’re just going to try and put together a wallpaper of sound, and then put some lines and musical characters over that."
Tickets are selling fast, and are but £12 from We Got Tickets here. Stay tuned to the Quietus for an announcement of one of our favourite new bands supporting Amiina at the event.
