Matthew Herbert Details New Album, ‘The Horse’

A collaboration with the London Contemporary Orchestra, it also features Shabaka Hutchings and Theon Cross

Matthew Herbert has shared details of his next album, a collaborative record with the London Contemporary Orchestra called The Horse.

Out in May, the 15-track record was made using a full-size horse skeleton as a sound source – flutes used on the record, for example, were custom-made from the horse’s thigh bones. The album explores contemporary jazz and classical music, as well as the electronic music with which Herbert originally made his name.

As well as the London Contemporary Orchestra, The Horse features contributions from Kokoroko’s Edward Wakili-Hick and Sons Of Kemet’s Shabaka Hutchings and Theon Cross, among others. Cross appears on the album’s lead track, ‘The Horse Has A Voice’, which you can listen to just above.

Herbert will present the album live alongside the London Contemporary Orchestra at London’s Barbican Hall on October 14. Tickets are on sale here.

Modern Recordings / BMG will release The Horse on May 26, 2023.
