Amsterdam Club De School To Reopen In September

Shut since March 2020, the venue will return for one last 16-month run

Amsterdam club De School is reopening next month for the first time since March 2020.

The venue will return to host club events from September 9, with a final 16-month run confirmed that will take it through to its final closure in January 2024. While the venue has been closed as a club, it has undergone some renovations and changes to its layout. The team behind the venue, as well as its internal set-up of staff, have also undergone some changes, with new policies introduced, such as a code of conduct, house rules and an awareness team.

The changes have taken place due to the venue’s past decision to close as a club in the summer of 2020 amid a wave of controversy that saw clubgoers, as well as members of Amsterdam’s nightlife community, make serious allegations about incidents of impropriety involving security, and draw attention to the club’s lack of diversity with regards to the make-up of staff and event programming.

The club’s director of operations, Erdal Kiran, who joined the De School team in July 2021 after the allegations were made, has overseen the changes that have taken place since at De School. A new creative team will oversee programming, Kiran told Resident Advisor, and there will be a focus on art and education, as well as music, that will include daytime events such as workshops and talks.

The restaurant and café at De School, which remained open after the club’s initial closure was announced in summer 2020, will continue to operate as before. The full code of conduct and house rules will be made publicly available on De School’s website later this month, with programming details also set to follow in the coming weeks.
