Cat Power Covers Nick Cave, Iggy Pop And More On New Album

There are also renditions of tracks by Frank Ocean, Lana Del Rey and the Pogues, among others

Cat Power is releasing a new covers album, simply titled Covers.

Set for release in January, the new record completes a trilogy of sorts, following 2000’s The Covers Record and 2008’s Jukebox. Produced entirely by the artist, real name Chan Marshall, Covers features renditions of tracks by the likes of Nick Cave, Iggy Pop, Lana Del Rey, Billie Holiday, Jackson Browne, The Replacements, Bob Seger and the Pogues. You can listen to her take on Frank Ocean’s ‘Bad Religion’, which features on the album, above.

Marshall’s cover of ‘Bad Religion’ came about after performing her own track, ‘In Your Face’, on tour. "That song was bringing me down," she says. "So I started pulling out lyrics from ‘Bad Religion’ and singing those instead of getting super depressed. Performing covers is a very enjoyable way to do something that feels natural to me when it comes to making music."

Domino will release Covers on January 14, 2021.
