Ryuichi Sakamoto Releases Score For Film ‘Minamata’

The soundtrack for the Andrew Levitas-directed film is out today (July 30)

Ryuichi Sakamoto’s score for the film Minamata has been released by Milan Records.

The Andrew Levitas-directed film itself, which revolves around an American photographer who documented the effects of mercury poisoning on the citizens of Minamata in Japan, was released in February 2020. Sakamoto’s score takes in 22 pieces, that conclude with ‘One Single Voice’, performed by the Welsh vocalist Katherine Jenkins. You can listen to Sakamoto’s ‘Minamata Piano Theme’ from the soundtrack above.

"Ryuichi was my dream collaborator — he would be on any film — but on this mission in particular, there could be no one else," Levitas writes in the liner notes for the vinyl release of the soundtrack. "The music quite literally needed to represent both the absolute best of humanity as well as the worst. In my opinion, Ryuichi was able to elegantly ride this razor’s edge and deliver on this concept entirely."

Minamata (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is out now on Milan Records.
