Unsound Reveals First Programme Details For 2021 Edition

Shackleton will collaborate with Wacław Zimpel, while Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe will present his live score for horror film 'Candyman'

Unsound has revealed the first lineup details for its 2021 edition, which is taking place under the theme of dəəp authentic and will cover both in-person and online events.

As part of the in-person edition in Kraków, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe will present the live premiere of his score for director Nia DaCosta’s 2021 horror film Candyman. He will perform the score alongside musicians Matthew Morandi, Randall Dunn, Brent Arnold, Hubert Zemler, Resina and Kraków’s Spółdzielnia Muzyczna Contemporary Ensemble.

Elsewhere, Weavings, the event which took place as part of Unsound’s 2020 online edition and saw Nicolás Jaar perform live alongside 12 other musicians via Zoom, will be repeated in a real-life setting. Jaar has created a visual score to accompany this year’s performance, which will feature a number of musicians from the original staging who are yet to be announced.

Shackleton and Wacław Zimpel, who teamed up on last year’s Primal Forms album, will unite for a live performance called The Spirit Still Remains. It will involve alto clarinet, electronics and voice. Eartheater will present her 2020 album Phoenix: Flames Are Dew Upon My Skin in a live setting alongside the newly formed Phoenix Ensemble, which is made up of a number of Kraków-based classical musicians, and Angel Bat Dawid will also play live.

The festival’s club programme includes a debut b2b DJ performance between two generations of footwork, as RP Boo and SHERELLE link up. LSDXOXO will also debut his new live show, while New York’s AceMo and MoMA Ready will DJ together as AceMoMA.

Other programme highlights so far announced include a live edition of Holly Herndon and Mat Dryhurst’s Interdependence podcast, and a live performance that will see Polish percussionists Hubert Zemler and Miłosz Pękala reinterpret the work of Jlin, as well as their own Krzysztof Penderecki-inspired compositions.

All of Unsound’s events will take place with a limited capacity in 2021, and tickets for a number of them will go on sale individually. All events currently require audiences to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Unsound will take place from October 13 to 17, 2021. Find more information here.
