Public Enemy have shared details of a new album, What You Gonna Do When The Grid Goes Down?
The record, which is due out next month, is Public Enemy’s first for Def Jam, the label that they debuted on in 1987, in over two decades. Alongside the album’s announcement, the group have shared a 2020 remix of their classic track ‘Fight The Power’.
In a statement, the band described ‘Fight The Power’ as "an unflinching statement about the destruction the current administration has unleashed on the country and its people. [It] speaks truth to power while urging people to fight against racism, injustice and oppression with their vote."
On their return to Def Jam, Chuck D said: "Cultural Institutions are important. Being an integral part of one is an honour bestowed and to uphold. Public Enemy songs are forever sonic prints in the sands of time. And it’s time — it’s necessary — to bring the noise again from a place called home. Def Jam. Fight The Power 2020."
Flavor Flav added: "Def Jam is like the house we grew up in. It’s cool to be home."
The release of What You Gonna Do When The Grid Goes Down? follows on from Flavor Flav’s apparent departure from Public Enemy earlier this year after a disagreement within the group. Chuck D however later suggested that this was actually a hoax.
Def Jam will release What You Gonna Do When The Grid Goes Down? on September 25, 2020.
