Rian Treanor has shared details of his second album, File Under UK Metaplasm.
Due to be released via Planet Mu, as with his debut 2019 LP, ATAXIA, the album takes influence from the time Treanor spent in Uganda in late 2018 after being invited to play at Nyege Nyege Festival. You can listen to the album’s lead track, ‘Hypnic Jerks’, just below.
While in Uganda for Nyege Nyege Festival, Treanor spent a month at the Nyege Nyege collective’s Boutique Studio in Kampala, where he took in the work of other artists in residence such as Tanzania’s Jay Mitta and Sisso, and Glasgow experimental duo The Modern Institute. That period birthed what a press release describes as a "jerky blend of hybridised footwork and singeli" in his music.
Speaking about the development of his productions on his second album, Treanor says: "It’s using all those formulaic dance structures but just slightly mangled or messed up. I’m still focused on making functioning dance music for clubs, but I’m really interested in how far you push that before it’s just like – no."
