Matmos Collaborate With 99 Musicians On New Album

'The Consuming Flame: Open Exercises In Group Form' features contributions from Oneohtrix Point Never, Giant Swan, Yo La Tengo, and more

Matmos have shared details of their next album, The Consuming Flame: Open Exercises In Group Form.

The new record, which clocks in at three hours, comes just a year on from their last, Plastic Anniversary, and takes in contributions from 99 other musicians. You can hear an excerpt from the album, titled ‘No Concept, which features clipping. and David Grubbs, above.

All of the musicians featured were given one simple instruction for their contribution: they could play anything that they wanted, but the tempo of any rhythmic material had to be set at 99 beats per minute. Amongst the featured artists are Oneohtrix Point Never, Giant Swan, Yo La Tengo, DeForrest Brown Jr. (AKA Speaker Music), Pig Destroyer, Jennifer Walshe, Locrian, and Matthew Herbert.

The album will be released in two forms: as a three-disc set with one longform track on each CD, and as a 40-track streaming album. It will also come with a colour-coded chart to help listeners find timestamps for each artist’s contribution.

The Consuming Flame: Open Exercises In Group Form arrives just a few months on from Shall We Go On Sinning So That Grace May Increase?, the latest album by The Soft Pink Truth, which is the project of one-half of Matmos, Drew Daniel. That album was named our favourite of the year so far earlier this week.

Thrill Jockey will release The Consuming Flame: Open Exercises In Group Form on August 21, 2020.
